Australia Day: A view from Afar

Celebrate Australia Day with Lamingtons and Slices/Bites

Australia Day, celebrated on January 26, is fast approaching.

When I moved to the U.S. over three decades ago, Australia Day felt pretty simple. It marked the tail end of summer, the return from Chrissie holidays (summer vacation), and long, sun-soaked days best spent at the beach.

Living far from home has changed how I see the day. Australia Day now holds layered meaning for me, pride and nostalgia for where I come from, alongside reflection and listening, especially to the voices and experiences of Australia’s Indigenous communities, who experience this day very differently.

At Boomerang Bites, we celebrate Australian food and the sense of community it creates, while holding space for that complexity. We believe it’s possible to honour our roots, acknowledge what we’re still learning, and choose care and respect in how we show up.

Sharing lamingtons, stories, and time together, thoughtfully and with intention, feels right.

Lamos are back!

Lamingtons (or lamos, IYKYK) are one of Australia’s most iconic bakes,  and ours are back and ready for pre-order.

Soft sponge, dunked in rich chocolate and rolled in coconut, they’re handmade in small batches and made to be shared. Think afternoon tea with a cuppa, a box on the table when mates come over, or a little slice of home just because.

Perfect for Australia Day, weekend gatherings, or any day that calls for something sweet and nostalgic. No fireworks required, just good company and maybe a second lamington

 Lamington pre-orders are now open
Order ahead via the link in our bio / website
