This summer has felt a little nostalgic.
In just a few short weeks, my youngest will start his senior year of high school, making this officially our last summer of school holidays. And somehow, this season has been full of "lasts."
My two oldest have finished college and entered the workforce, so the long, carefree summer breaks are already behind them. Life is changing, and while I'm excited for what's ahead, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't feeling just a little sentimental.
Today I took my youngest to what was probably his last pediatric appointment. Saying goodbye to the doctor and staff who've cared for my boys for nearly twenty years was unexpectedly emotional. Although... I have to admit there was also a small sense of relief knowing I have one less appointment to schedule and one less waiting room to sit in!
And don't even get me started on the back-to-school medical forms.
I'm convinced they were my least favorite part of raising kids. Every summer I'd think I had finally conquered the system, only to discover another form, another signature, another vaccination record was required. Whether it was school, camp, soccer, or some other activity, there always seemed to be another piece of paperwork standing between my child and simply turning up. IYKYK.
It's funny how parenting works. The very things you couldn't wait to be done with somehow become wrapped up in the memories you'll treasure most. I'll happily wave goodbye to the paperwork, but these final weeks of summer with my youngest? Those I'll be holding onto just a little tighter.
Maybe that's one reason I've always loved baking. Food has a funny way of slowing us down and bringing people back around the table, even as life keeps moving us into new seasons.
